Ice fishing near Steamboat
Steamboat Lake (north of town) and Stagecoach Reservoir (south of town) are the two main ice fishing spots, and both are Colorado state parks.
Ice status: no safe ice reported as of November 1, 2026
- Steamboat Lake: the lake closed to boating Nov. 1. Non-motorized boats can still be hand-launched, at your own risk, until the lake freezes over (CPW).
- Stagecoach Reservoir: CPW says the reservoir is usually frozen from the end of December through March (CPW).
- Call before you go: Steamboat Lake (970) 879-3922 · Stagecoach (970) 736-2436 (Steamboat Pilot).

Ice safety (CPW guidelines)
- 2 inches or less: stay off. 4 inches of good ice can hold one person walking. 6 inches: snowmobile or ATV. 8–12 inches: car or small pickup (CPW ice fishing).
- Clear, blue ice is strongest. White or gray ice is much weaker. Snow can hide thin ice and open water. Be careful near pressure ridges, inlets and anything sticking up through the ice (CPW).
- Drill test holes no more than 30 feet apart as you go. Carry ice picks on a cord, bring a buddy, and tell someone your plan (CPW).
- Never trust early ice. Even in a cold January, rangers have found coves safer than the middle of these lakes (Steamboat Radio, Jan. 2026).
Stagecoach Reservoir
Rainbow trout and northern pike are popular through the ice. The park office lends basic ice fishing kits and hand augers for free. Snowmobiles are allowed on the ice, conditions permitting, but only for fishing access (CPW). Common species are rainbow trout, brown trout, northern pike and walleye, and CPW encourages anglers to keep pike and walleye (CPW). There's no bag or possession limit on walleye (CPW regulations). The river below the dam is a different water with its own closures; see Fly fishing.
Steamboat Lake
The lake sits at about 8,100 feet below Hahns Peak, and winter activities include ice fishing (CPW). Check the CPW Steamboat Lake page for species, and the Colorado Fishing Brochure for bag limits.
Licenses, rules and park passes
- You need a Colorado fishing license at 16 or older; kids 15 and under fish free. Adults 18–64 also need a Habitat Stamp (CPW).
- Ice holes can be no more than 10 inches across. Using live fish as bait is prohibited on the West Slope (CPW Fishing Brochure).
- Both parks require a state park pass. CPW lists daily vehicle passes on each park's page (Stagecoach · Steamboat Lake).
