Fly fishing around Steamboat

Loading Steamboat weather…
The Yampa River runs right through downtown Steamboat Springs, and the Elk River joins it west of town. The summer of 2026 was very hard on these rivers, so check closures before every trip.
Closures as of November 1, 2026
- Lifted Oct. 30: CPW's voluntary closures on the Yampa (Chuck Lewis State Wildlife Area to Steamboat's western city limit) and on the Elk River. The city's Yampa recreation closure also ended Oct. 30 (CPW release · City of Steamboat).
- Mandatory through Nov. 15: no fishing where Fish Creek meets the Yampa. That covers the pool at the confluence, Fish Creek up to the Safeway bridge, and 100 feet upstream and 200 feet downstream on the Yampa. This protects spawning mountain whitefish (CPW).
- Still closed, likely until spring 2027: a mandatory closure on the 0.6 miles from Stagecoach Dam to the lowest state park boundary, and a voluntary closure from the top of Sarvis Creek State Wildlife Area through the BLM stretch (CPW).
- Why: in July CPW found more than 300 dead mountain whitefish on the lower Elk River after water temperatures reached 82°F during a severe drought (CPW).

Yampa River through town
The city closes the river within city limits when downtown flows drop below 85 cfs. In 2026 that closure started July 1 and ended Oct. 30 (City of Steamboat). Check the city page and CPW's drought closures list before you go.
Stagecoach tailwater
The tailwater below Stagecoach Dam is catch-and-release only, and only artificial flies and lures are allowed on the Yampa from the dam to Catamount Lake. CPW notes it gets heavy use in spring, when it has steady flows while other rivers run high with snowmelt (CPW Stagecoach State Park). The top 0.6 miles are under the mandatory closure above.
Elk River
CPW's voluntary closure on the Elk was lifted Oct. 30, but whitefish numbers on the spawning grounds were only 10–20% of the historical average (CPW). Handle fish gently.
Seasons and hot water
- Above 71°F, trout and other cold-water fish are less likely to survive being caught and released. CPW suggests fishing elsewhere once the water reaches 70°F, fishing early in the day or at higher elevations, and keeping fish in the water while you unhook them (CPW).
- For current hatches and conditions, ask a local fly shop (below).
Colorado fishing license
Anyone 16 or older needs a Colorado fishing license; kids 15 and under fish for free. Annual licenses run from March 1 to March 31 of the next year. Buy one online, by phone or at retailers (CPW licenses). Adults 18–64 also need a Habitat Stamp (CPW).
